CS Degree Day 92
What I did today?
- 6.3260J: Transport layer - TCP, UDP, reliability, congestion control
- 6.3260J: TCP three-way handshake, slow start, AIMD
- 6.4200 AI: Lecture 1 - Search, state spaces, BFS/DFS
- 6.4200 AI: Lecture 2 - A* search, heuristics, admissibility
TCP congestion control is the algorithm keeping the internet from collapsing. AIMD - additive increase, multiplicative decrease. When things go well, increase your sending rate slowly. When you detect congestion, cut it in half. This asymmetry is what prevents congestion collapse. The internet has been running on this algorithm since 1988.
